Blood Pressure Monitor Error Codes and Troubleshooting

An error message or a wildly unexpected reading usually means the device couldn't measure cleanly, not that anything is wrong with you. Most home monitor problems trace back to a handful of causes: cuff fit, movement, batteries, or positioning. This guide walks through the common errors and the simple fixes, so you can get back to a reliable reading.

First, check your manual

Error codes aren't standardized, so an "E" or "Err" message means different things on different brands. Your monitor's manual lists exactly what each code means for your model. Keep it with the device, or look up your model number online. The fixes below cover the causes behind most codes regardless of brand.

Cuff errors: fit, position, and air leaks

Many errors point to the cuff not building or holding pressure properly.

  • Too loose: re-wrap snugly, with room for just one or two fingertips under the edge.
  • Wrong size: a cuff that barely closes may trigger errors; confirm your size in our blood-pressure-cuff-size-guide.
  • Tube not connected: push the air tube firmly into the port.
  • Air leak or worn cuff: an old cuff can leak; if it won't hold pressure, replace it with the correct size for your model.

Movement and posture errors

Some monitors, like the A&D UA-651, actively detect body movement and will flag it. If you see a movement or measurement error:

  • Sit still and don't talk during the reading.
  • Keep your arm resting and relaxed, not tensed or holding the cuff.
  • Support your back, keep feet flat, and rest your arm at heart level.
  • Wait a minute, then try again without rushing.

Battery and power problems

Weak power causes a surprising number of faults.

  • A low-battery symbol or a dim, flickering display means it's time for fresh batteries; replace all of them together.
  • A monitor that won't complete an inflation may be underpowered even before the low symbol shows.
  • For rechargeable models like the Withings BPM Connect, give it a full charge.
  • If you use a mains adapter, check it's the correct one and fully seated.

Unexpected or inconsistent readings

Sometimes there's no error code, just a number that looks off.

  • Recheck cuff size, placement, and posture, the usual culprits.
  • Take two or three readings a minute apart; a single reading naturally bounces.
  • Remember blood pressure varies minute to minute, so some variation is normal.

If you're unsure whether the device itself is off, compare it against your next clinic reading (see how-to-check-your-monitor-is-accurate). We can help you get a clean reading, but what the numbers mean is for your doctor.

Connectivity and sync trouble

For app-connected monitors, pairing is a common snag, and Bluetooth complaints are among the most frequent for some models.

  • Make sure the app has Bluetooth permission and the phone's Bluetooth is on.
  • Keep the phone close during a reading.
  • Restart the app, and if needed remove and re-pair the device.
  • A failed sync doesn't erase the reading; most monitors store it on-device to sync later.

Frequently asked

My monitor keeps showing an error. Is it broken?

Usually not. Most repeated errors trace to a loose or wrong-size cuff, movement or talking during the reading, or weak batteries. Work through those first. If a well-fitted cuff, stillness, and fresh batteries don't help, check the manual and consider the warranty.

Why does my reading look far higher or lower than usual?

A one-off odd reading is often a technique or cuff issue, or just natural fluctuation. Recheck your posture and cuff, then take two or three readings a minute apart. If a device seems consistently off, compare it against a clinic reading rather than interpreting the number yourself.

The cuff won't inflate or hold pressure. What now?

Check the tube is fully connected and the cuff is wrapped snugly, then confirm the batteries aren't weak. If it still won't hold pressure, the cuff may have an air leak and need replacing with the correct size for your model.

My monitor won't sync to its app. Does that lose my reading?

Generally no. Most connected monitors store readings on the device and sync them once the connection is restored. Toggle the phone's Bluetooth, keep it close, restart the app, and re-pair if needed.
